The Challenge
Hachette Learning (formerly Hodder Education), one of the largest education publishers serving the Caribbean, needed a distribution partner in Jamaica capable of eliminating stockouts, strengthening delivery logistics, and supporting its ambition to grow market share across the island.
Bookzone Limited, a leading local supplier of educational goods and services, serving more than 300 bookstores, had the operational track record. What it needed was a compelling, evidence-based case that a global publisher could bank on: one that demonstrated Bookzone's capacity to absorb a near-doubling of volume while maintaining service excellence and profitability.
The Solution
Beginning in November 2021, HCA worked closely with Bookzone's leadership over a three-year engagement to design and articulate a winning value proposition. HCA
- Conducted a situational analysis of the publisher's Jamaica operations, identifying the distribution and fulfilment gaps the partnership would need to close;
- Developed a comprehensive proposal for the provision of book distribution services, covering organizational structure, facilities, technological infrastructure, market operations, demand management, and risk management;
- Designed a scaling strategy — including phased warehouse expansion, a dedicated warehouse management system, and strategic staffing — to demonstrate readiness for a projected 80–95% increase in handling volume;
- Defined shared KPIs and a revenue optimization framework to align both organizations around cost control and margin performance; and
- Prepared a transition and scaling roadmap that gave the publisher confidence in continuity of supply ahead of the new school year.
The Outcome
In July 2026, Hachette Learning announced Bookzone as its exclusive distributor in Jamaica, covering its schools catalogue, Professional Development collection (formerly John Catt), the Reading Planet series, and Hachette Children’s Group titles.
“We are both proud and honoured to have been appointed as Hachette Learning’s distributor in Jamaica. This partnership brings together two organisations that share a deep commitment to advancing education.”
— Nigel Walker, Managing Director, Bookzone Limited
